I have spots on my teeth, how can I eliminate them?

The stains on the teeth are one of the most frequent oral alterations , since they appear over the years and the most common is that they are due to external factors related to our own habits or diet.

However, we should not resign ourselves to having them and, much less, ignoring them. On the one hand, stains on the teeth can indicate a  more serious problem.

On the other, they are very unsightly and cause the smile to lose both its original white tone and its healthy appearance.

The main cause of the spots is insufficient oral hygiene. However, there are also habits, foods and medications that discolor our teeth.

Although knowing these causes will help us to avoid, in part, that the stains appear it is also true that over the years the teeth lose the uniform white tone of when we were children.

What types of spots are there?

Broadly speaking, we can define three different types of spots:

Brown Spots

These types of spots are very visible because they are darker than the rest of the tooth enamel.

They tend to be superficial, so they are easier to remove, and are caused by the consumption of coffee, tea and tobacco.

Yellow Spots

Most often, these types of spots are caused by the intake of acidic foods (lemon, orange, lime, vinegar).

This type of food erodes the enamel layer, which becomes thinner, and show the dentin, which is yellow.

These yellow stains can also occur through the use of tetracyclines , which are antibiotics that if administered to children during dental development can cause permanent discoloration.

In addition to the mentioned origins, the yellow teeth can also be due to a blow , which causes the tooth to become necrotic and lose its vitality.

White Spots

On the other hand, the white spots on the teeth have different origins. For example, they can be a symptom of poor nutrition in which there is a shortage of calcium or iron.

Other times, this type of spots appear as a result of caries that starts to cause decalcification of the enamel.

Finally, it can also be the case that these spots are due to an excess of fluoride in childhood, while the teeth are developing. This excess can lead to fluorosis, which are small white spots that form on the teeth and are maintained when they reach adulthood.

How do I erase the spots on my teeth?

Many times, the unsightly stains on the teeth are easier to remove than it seems . But to be able to solve them, in the first place it is necessary to determine what is the origin and the extension of said spots.

For this, my advice is to go to a dentist specialized in Dental Aesthetics which is Dr. Roze clean and comfortable dental clinic in Dubai that is of our confidence. This, once you have performed a dental examination and a diagnosis, you can establish the most appropriate treatment.

These treatments can be the following:

Professional oral cleaning

If the stains are superficial – like those caused by tobacco and eating habits – these can be removed with a professional oral cleaning.

Since there are many ways to perform a cleaning, it is necessary to emphasize that for this treatment to be effective, dental hygiene must be exhaustive.

Teeth Whitening

In other cases, discoloration can be resolved with a teeth whitening. Since there are several types of whitening treatment, in our clinic we carry out a combined whitening that lasts one month.

This includes splints with whitening gel that the patient is placed at home and a session of cold light lamp in the clinic, which serves to enhance the action of the splints.

In addition, at the beginning of the treatment we included a professional oral hygiene such as the one mentioned in the previous point. In this way, we leave teeth clean and in optimal conditions so that tooth whitening lasts longer and is more effective.

Depending on the cause and extent of the stains, porcelain or composite veneers can be used as the only treatment or complement whitening.

In cases in which the staining is very considerable and is due, for example, to the use of tetracyclines, it may be necessary to perform a whitening prior to the placement of veneers.

This is because, to provide naturalness, the veneers are very thin and translucent. Given these characteristics, if the tooth has a very strong discoloration , it will be seen through the veneer.

Finally, it is important to note that, in addition to changing the color of our teeth, the veneers allow us to modify other aspects of their front face, such as  shape, size or position.

How to prevent the spots from appearing again?

Whatever the solution proposed by the specialist in Dental Aesthetics plastic surgery clinic, it is important to emphasize that to maintain the results of any treatment for longer, it is essential to carry out a thorough hygiene at home.

For this, we recommend brushing the teeth after each meal preferably with an electric toothbrush, flossing and a fluoride rinse.

In addition, it is convenient that the bristles of the brush are soft so as not to attack the enamel or the gums. And, finally, we recommend changing the brush or its head after  every three months so that these bristles do not lose effectiveness.

With regard to our eating habits, it would be very positive to limit the consumption of foods that stain the teeth. That is, if we like a food or a drink that dyes the teeth, it is not necessary to eliminate it completely from our diet, but to apply moderation.

On the other hand, there are other habits such as smoking that are not only harmful to the appearance of our teeth, but also are very harmful to our general health.
